The Giants have inked a 3 year-deal with Denard Span. Span had a 301/365/431, BA/OBP/SLG, slash line in 275 plate appearances in 2015. He is a career 287/352/395 guy, who has been above average defensively. Span hasn’t been as good defensively his last 2 years but projects to be 2 wins above replacement level and close to an average fielder according to Fangraphs.
Update: Span will get $10.33 million per season and a $31 million guaranteed according to Andrew Baggarly. Baggarly also shared a quote from Bruce Bochy saying, “I like it. Always liked Denard.”
Span hit well last year but also had labrum surgery on his left hip September 1st. The hip problem limited him to 61 games in 2015. This was Span’s 3rd operation in 10 month’s time with the other two being core-muscle surgeries. He posted the following video on Twitter recently to prove his health.
